Post-AGM and end of year message

20th Dec 2015

Dear Players and Families

2015 saw another successful season for the Walkerville Cats Junior Football Teams. We fielded 21 teams with approximately 450 players. In the premiership divisions we had 8 of our 9 teams play in finals, 3 made the grand final and our under 11 White and Under 14 Red enjoyed premiership success.

There has been a lot happening through the off season and we wanted to take this opportunity to update you on a couple of these things. We are also starting to think about registration for 2016 so have included below some information on this.

AGM and Committee

Our AGM was held on 17 December 2015. There have been some changes to the Committee which we wanted to update members on.

Jack Dowling has retired from the Committee. Jack has been on the committee for several years including as President for the past 2 years and on the Football Subcommittee. We want to take this opportunity to thank Jack for his contribution over many years. Jack will continue to coach next year. Andrew Gniel has been appointed as President.

Stacey Nattrass has also retired after many years of service. Stacey has done a tremendous job in driving our merchandise which has been great in creating a stronger club as well as providing a good revenue stream for the club. In 2015 Stacey did not have any boys playing so to continue in this role for a further year and help was outstanding and on behalf of everyone we thank Stacey for her contribution.

At the AGM we welcomed three new committee members. Marc Cooney joins and will be on the Football Sub-committee. Marc was also coach of the Under 12 Red team. Paul Bettison joins and will take on the role of Auskick coordinator. And Julie Forbes who has worked closely with the committee in 2015 in the area of compliance has also been appointed to the committee.

The Committee for 2016 is

Andrew Gniel President; Andrew will continue to fulfil the role of Treasurer in the interim
Jude Morton Vice President; Jude also manages Compliance
Kevin McGuinness Secretary
Cary McNeill Team Manager Coordinator
Scott Dolling Sponsorship and NEMJFA Delegate
Phil Grace Football Subcommittee
Rob Marchioro Football Subcommittee
Marc Cooney Football Subcommittee
Julie Forbes Compliance/Medical
Claire Favretto Website and PR
Phil Rankine Events
Paul Bettison Auskick Coordinator

We are keen to secure a committee member to manage Merchandise. If you are able to help please contact the club.

Registration for 2016 Season

We will look to register 22 teams in 2016 from under 6 to under 15. As in prior years, priority will first be placed on registration of existing players from the 2015 season. The registration process will be the same as last year, with compulsory online registration through Sportingpulse.

In the week ending 23 January 2016 you will receive an email with a link to your childs information and a password for you to go in and amend any of your details that have changed as well as register them for Season 2016. If you do not receive an email by 23 January 2016 please write to us at wjfc.cats@gmail.com.

You will need to complete this registration by 7 February 2016. This will enable us to determine the number of returning players and to then look at any new player applications. As with last year payment of fees will be required at the time of registration. A registration day has not been scheduled at this stage given the process outlined above. Should a decision be made to hold such an event we will advise in due course.

As previously advised to parents of this years under 10 group as we go from 3 U10 teams in non-premiership to 2 U11 teams in premiership division we reserve the right to conduct a selection process for both U11 teams. Of course we will try to ensure all boys who want to play have an opportunity to play as was achieved this year in the transition from under 10 to under 11.

SANFL Proposal

You may be aware of the proposal to integrate all Metropolitan Junior Football Associations, being North Eastern Metro (NEMJFA), Metro South, Metro West & Southern League, under the direct governance of the SANFL. The WJFC has met with the SANFL to discuss the proposal and we, along with all the clubs affiliated with NEMJFA, with the exception of Hectorville FC, believe the proposal in its current form is not an acceptable outcome for our club and the development of our players. The Southern Football League Clubs have also decided like us to say no to assigning governance to the SANFL for 2016. We understand that Metro South and Metro West will transition to the SANFL model.

The proposed changes are many and vast, and the detail on what the future competition would look like was vague, and it was simply not possible to give it proper consideration in the time frame the SANFL wanted. At the forefront of our (and all other clubs in NEMJFA) concerns include the SANFL’s direction to dissolve our current U6 & U7 competition, that the SANFL could at their discretion cap team numbers and hence kids would be sent away from our Club, changes to team structures for Under 8 to Under 11 that would reduce the number of players we could accommodate and the increased layers of bureaucracy diminishing our voice or involvement in any key decisions that will impact our club and our players and members.

With the continued support of the NEMJFA executive and its affiliated clubs, we have informed the SANFL we will postpone any decision to hand over control of our competition to them for 12 months, with a commitment to work closely with the SANFL through the 2016 season with the aim to bridge the gaps in the proposed competition guidelines versus our preferred model in which we will be willing to support in a long standing partnership with the SANFL. Through this process we will endeavour to keep our members updated.

As such our planning for 2016 season is on the basis of a NEMJFA run competition as in prior years.

The Committee of WJFC would like to wish all players and their families, supporters and volunteers a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year and we look forward to another successful season in 2016.

Warmest Regards
Committee of WJFC
